【盲蛇石の伝承】

【教傳地獄と千体地蔵の由来】

1318年、奥州白河に「教伝」という僧侶がいた。教伝は幼いころから不良であったことを心配され、母によって蓮華寺に預けられていたのであった。 1336年、教伝は友人ら２～3人と那須の温泉へ湯治に行くこととなったが、出かける朝、短気を起こして母親の用意した朝食の膳を足蹴にしてそのまま出立する。 数日ほど那須温泉に逗留していた教伝らは、殺生石の近くを物見遊山に訪れた。すると突然荒天となって雷鳴が轟き、地面が割れて火炎熱湯が吹き上げてきた。友人らは逃げ出したが、教伝だけは噴出した泥流に囚われてしまった。きょうでんは友人らに向かって「俺はここに来る前、母の作った朝飯を足蹴にした。その天罰を受けて俺は火の海に落ちていくのだ」と叫んだ。友人らはなんとか教伝の体を引き上げたが、教伝の腰から下は炭のように焼けただれ、息をひきとってしまった。 その後、湯本温泉の有志が、享保5年に地蔵を建立して供養を行い、親不孝のいましめとして参拝するものが後をたたなかったという。（那須観光課・那須観光協会による立て看板参考：編集者による要約）

【殺生石の由来】

昔、中国やインドで美しい女性に化けて悪行を重ねていた白面金毛九尾の狐が今から800年ほど前日本に渡来しました。 　九尾の狐は「玉藻の前」と名乗って朝廷に仕え、日本国を亡ぼそうとしていました。 　しかし、陰陽師阿部泰成に正体を見破られると、九尾の狐は那須野が原まで逃げてきました。 ここでも九尾の狐は悪さを繰り返していたので、朝廷は三浦介、上総介の両名に命じ、遂に九尾の狐を退治しました。 これを伝え聞いた泉渓寺の源翁和尚（げんのうおしょう）が毒石に向かって大乗経をあげ続けると、一筋の白煙とともに玉藻の前の姿が現れ、石は三つに割れて飛び散り、一つがここに残りました。 それ以来、人々はその石を殺生石と呼ぶようになり、今に伝えられています。(那須町)（立て看板より）

The fox itself into a beautiful woman again. Her name was Tamamono-mae. She was a courtesan under the Japanese Emperor and planned to destroy the country. But a fortune-teller,Abe-no-yasunari, found out her true character. So the nine taller fox ran away to the plains of Nasu and started to commit crimes again. Then,The Emperror orderd Kazusa-no-suke and Miura-no-suke to kill the fox with 80,000 troops. Finally, it was killed. Bud,it became a poisonous stone. It killed every thing that comes into contact with it. The stone was said to have been destroyed in the Nanboku-cho period by Gennoh who was the Buddist priest of the Senkei temple. He heard adout the poisous stone. And he kept chanting sutras over and over. Finally, Tamamo-no-mae could see a could of white smoke and the stone was split into three pieces and one of them stayes here. Since then,people have called it “Sesshou-seki”.[Nasu　Town]
